Flu season is here, and Massachusetts is seeing a high number of flu cases, according to recent reports from state health officials. Taking steps to prepare your home can help you and your family stay healthy, feel more comfortable if illness strikes, and avoid extra trips to the store. Here’s a simple guide to what you should have on hand this flu season.
Why prepare now?
The flu spreads quickly, especially in colder months when people spend more time indoors. Having supplies ready can help you manage symptoms and recover more comfortably if you or someone in your home gets sick. It also means you can avoid exposing others by making unnecessary trips outside while you are contagious.
Must-have flu season supplies
- Fever and Pain Relief - Stock up on acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) for both adults and children. These medicines help reduce fever and relieve body aches. Always check the label for proper dosing and talk to your doctor if you are unsure what is safe for you or your child.
- Thermometer - A digital thermometer is a must for tracking fevers. Keep it clean and ready to use. Knowing if you or your child has a fever can help you decide when to call your healthcare provider.
- Fluids - The flu can cause dehydration both from fevers and fluid losses from things like vomiting and having a runny nose. Keep water, clear juices, electrolyte drinks such as Pedialyte, and broth available. Drinking small sips of fluids regularly throughout the day can make it easier to stay hydrated. Popsicles and freeze pops are also another way to get fluids into you or your child. Maintaining adequate hydration is key and a cornerstone of recovery.
- Easy-to-Digest Foods - It’s common to have a low appetite with the flu. Stock up on simple foods like applesauce, crackers, soup, rice, and bananas. These are gentle on the stomach and easy to prepare.
- Hand Soap and Sanitizer - Frequent handwashing is one of the best ways to stop the flu from spreading. Make sure you have enough soap and alcohol-based hand sanitizer for everyone in your home.
- Face Masks - If someone in your house is sick, wearing a mask can help stop the flu from spreading to others. Masks are especially important if you need to go out for medical care.
- Tissues - Have plenty of soft tissues for runny noses and sneezing. This helps prevent the spread of germs and keeps everyone more comfortable.
- Cleaning Supplies - Disinfectants and disposable gloves help keep surfaces germ-free. Focus on cleaning doorknobs, light switches, phones, and other commonly touched surfaces.
When to call your healthcare provider
Most people with the flu get better at home. However, call your healthcare provider if you or someone in your home has trouble breathing, chest pain, a high fever that will not go down, or seems very weak. Children, older adults, and people with certain health conditions are at higher risk for complications.
