Summer seems to pass quickly, and your child will soon be counting down the final days of summer break. As you prepare for the upcoming school year, here are some tips to help the transition be smoother for both you and your child:

  • Talk about the year ahead. Ask your child what they’re excited about—or nervous about. Reassure them that it’s totally normal to feel a mix of emotions.
  • Visit the new school together. If your child is starting at a new school, take a field trip to check it out. Walk or drive the route if your child will be walking or taking the bus. Additionally, check with the school about summer events for the opportunity to explore the building.
  • Check their gear. Make sure your child has clothes that fit comfortably. Feeling good in what they wear can give them a boost of confidence and reduce distractions about their appearance. Find a sturdy backpack that fits them well, and make sure they don’t overload it. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a backpack weigh no more than 5 to 10% of a child's body weight.
  • Find a buddy. Sharing a ride with a friend, whether in a bus or carpool, can make mornings more fun and less stressful.
  • Plan to create a balanced daily routine. Make sure there’s time for healthy meals, outdoor play, and homework. A little structure goes a long way.
  • Ease into the school schedule. About a week before school starts, start waking your child up a bit earlier each day. That way, the first morning back won’t be such a shock to the system!
  • Prioritize sleep. Most kids need between nine and 12 hours of sleep to perform at their best. A consistent bedtime routine—such as reading or drawing before bed—can help them wind down and prepare for sleep.
  • Limit screen time before bed. It can be helpful to turn off electronics at least an hour before bedtime. This practice can help your child get a good night’s sleep and feel more rested.

Each new school year offers a fresh start—a chance to grow, learn, and explore. With some preparation and plenty of encouragement, your child will be ready to tackle the year with confidence.
