Medical Appointments

Appointments will be scheduled with one of our weight management clinicians, Dr. Pascale CarbonaraDr. Giovanna Leddy, Dr. Svetlana Shkuratov, or Darya Zakirov, NP, who will oversee your care and work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan based on your goals and your past medical history.

Shared Medical Appointments

An effective option for care, these group medical appointments are facilitated by our clinical director, Dr. Pascale Carbonara, and our health coach, Christine Vasiliadis. You will attend with peers who are at different points in their weight loss journey. This kind of appointment is designed to promote accountability and create a safe and inviting place to share your weight loss journey with others, giving and accepting tips and tricks along the way. Christine's role is to help you set and achieve goals and learn stress reduction skills. Dr. Carbonara will create or follow up with you on the individual lifestyle modification treatment plan you build together. This may include pharmacotherapy interventions, new technologies, and bariatric surgery if recommended.

Nutrition Appointments

You can make an appointment with one of our registered dietitians at an Atrius Health location convenient for you. We have several nutritionists who specialize in eating disorders and diabetes education. Your nutritionist will work with you and your physician to identify a healthy eating routine that best fits your current lifestyle.

Innovative Support Technology

A great tool for those seeking the least invasive route to weight loss and for those who are not candidates for pharmacotherapy, indirect calorimetry is a new technology that can measure your resting metabolic rate, defined as how many calories you burn at rest or while doing nothing. From the resting metabolic rate, the machine can derive an exact caloric range you need to consume to lose weight based on your metabolic speed.

Diet and Pharmacotherapy

Our clinicians will work closely with you and your nutritionist to implement the right diet for you. At your first visit with the doctor, you will identify ways in which you can augment your current healthy habits and incorporate new ones. Follow up appointments will help you assess what’s working well and further adapt your routine to stick to healthy dieting guidelines. For some patients, we might recommend pharmacotherapy in conjunction with diet and lifestyle modifications. The function of these medications, all FDA-approved, is to reduce appetite, curb cravings, or block fat absorption. As these prescriptions are only effective when combined with lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, they will not be prescribed without agreement to make those lifestyle commitments.

Surgery

Bariatric surgery, performed at Emerson HospitalMount Auburn Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, and Beth Israel Hospital – Milton, is an elective option that is available to patients who seek this route for weight loss; it is not required at any point. When surgery is appropriate, we will coordinate your care by placing a referral on your behalf, ordering pertinent lab work, ordering required studies, assisting you with scheduling the procedure and developing lifestyle modifications to help you maintain the weight loss after the surgery.
