Getting Started

A referral from your primary care provider or specialist is required to schedule your physical therapy appointment.  Once we have received that referral from your clinician, a member of our physical therapy team will contact you to set up your initial physical therapy appointment.  We work closely with your referring providers and specialists to ensure your care will be well-coordinated and seamless.

Insurance

Please contact your health insurance plan prior to your first physical therapy appointment to understand any deductibles, copays or fees that might be associated with physical therapy.  If your health insurance plan places limits on the number of physical therapy sessions covered, please discuss with your physical therapist at your initial visit.

Initial and Follow-Up Visits

Your initial appointment, usually 30-60 minutes long, will be an evaluation with a physical therapist to assess your mobility and level of functioning. Your physical therapist will have access to relevant medical imagery reports and visits with referring doctors if you are an Atrius Health patient. You may also be asked to fill out a functional assessment form.

We ask that you bring loose comfortable clothing so that you can move easily. Physical therapy typically requires multiple sessions depending on the nature of your injury, procedure or individual goals. Based on the physical therapist’s initial evaluation, an estimated number of follow-up sessions will be determined for you.

Follow-up appointments usually last for 30-45 minutes and can be with a physical therapist or a physical therapy assistant. We recommend you select a single location for all of your appointments to ensure the most effective course of therapy.
