Lasers can be used in the treatment of facial flushing/rosacea, dilated blood vessels, leg veins, hemangiomas and other vascular lesions and birthmarks. In many cases, laser treatment for vascular birthmarks is covered by insurance. Other areas where lasers are beneficial in treatment include facial rejuvenation to improve skin tone and texture, treatment of brown spots, treatment of acne/acne scarring, and laser hair removal.
The dermatologists in Wellesley perform many types of laser treatments including:
- Pulse Dye Laser (PDL) - This laser is used for many vascular conditions and is an excellent treatment option for rosacea, flushing, dilated capillaries/veins, hemangiomas, cherry angiomas (common red bumps on the body) and vascular birthmarks. The treatment is quick and most patients tolerate the slight heat and stinging easily. There is usually some redness for a few days after, and there may be areas of focal bruising which lasts 7-10 days. The number of treatments is tailored to each patient and to each condition.
- FRAXEL Dual Restore® - We are pleased to offer the most updated version of this multipurpose laser, which revolutionized facial resurfacing. One of its wavelengths is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, and improves skin texture and elasticity. With the Dual version, the thullium wavelength is excellent for treating brown spots on the face and hands and discoloration due to prior acne or melasma. It revolutionized facial resurfacing because the downtime is minimal, and usually only consists of some redness the day of treatment, and darkening of brown spots for a few days post treatment.
Treatment is customized to your specific needs, and the physician will discuss which laser treatment is best to address your area of concern.
Sclerotherapy is used to treat spider veins. Concentrated saline solution is injected into the spider veins with a very fine needle. This causes the veins to slowly be destroyed over a period of 3-4 weeks. You will be asked to wear compression stockings for at least 1 week post treatment; you should also avoid aerobic exercise for four days following treatment. There is only minor cramping during the procedure, and side effects are minimal, usually limited to temporary bruising. Good results are usually obtained after two treatments.
