SOUTHBORO MEDICAL GROUP JOINS FORCES WITH
HEART CENTER OF METROWEST FOR EXPERT HEART CARE

Arrangement Connects Patients with CardioVascular
Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Southboro, MA (March 13, 2009) – Southboro Medical Group, an affiliate of Atrius Health, and physicians from the Heart Center of MetroWest are joining forces to provide patients with locally-delivered heart care.

Heart specialists from the Heart Center, an affiliate of the CardioVascular Institute (CVI) at Beth Israel deaconess Medical Center, will provide the full range of cardiology services at Southboro Medical Group (SMG These new cardiology services, including diagnostic testing and pacemaker checks, will be offered to patients at SMG’s Framingham and Southboro locations.

Interventional cardiology procedures typically will take place at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham. Advanced care, when needed, will be provided at the CVI on the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center campus in Boston. SMG, a 65-physician multi-specialty group, has offices in Southboro, Framingham, Natick, Milford, and Marlboro.

“A common philosophy drew us together,” said Alan Lobovits, MD, medical director of SMG. “We believe patients benefit from the convenience and lower cost of health care that is delivered locally. The Heart Center will help us expand our capacity to do this.”

When advanced care is needed, Lobovits added, “Our patients will receive it at an outstanding facility that has partnered with us to provide care for them in a coordinated way – the CardioVascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.”

Stanley M. Lewis, MD, chief executive officer of the CVI, added, “Another focus for both organizations is quality. We share a commitment to achieving outstanding clinical outcomes at every level.”

Coordination of patient care will be enhanced by sharing of electronic medical records, according to James Alderman, MD, president of the Heart Center of MetroWest. “When referrals are made, both referring and receiving physicians will have ready access to the patient’s medical history, outcomes, medications and test results. This means greater accuracy, fewer retests and when you return to your primary care doctor, he or she will know exactly what has been done.”

As a result of the new relationship with the Heart Center, Richard S. Blumenfeld, MD, currently the sole cardiologist at SMG, will join the Heart Center of MetroWest, which currently employs 13 heart specialists. He will continue to see patients full-time at SMG ‘s Framingham office. In addition, Harvey L. Goldfine, MD, an existing Heart Center cardiologist, will see patients at SMG’s Southboro office.

For an appointment with either Dr. Blumenfeld in Framingham or Dr. Goldfine in Southboro, patients may call 508-481-5500.
